HACKENSAW BOYS
May 26 @ 7:45 pm – 10:45 pm
HACKENSAW BOYS

For almost two decades, the Hackensaw Boys have plowed the asphalt bringing their raw, gritty American vernacular sounds to the music halls and streets across the world. Twenty years later, the group continues their burning hot vision of American roots music into a new age, fueled as much by a rowdy punk spirit as by the traditional masters that first inspired them.

The music began in 1999 when four friends from Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley found their collective ways to the roots music hub of Charlottesville. They didn’t waste time getting going, playing a show on the street the day of their first practice. The group let the good times roll and started adding like-minded people until their ranks reached twelve players for their first US tour. As with the folk and punk traditions which form the foundation of their sound, they’ve always operated more as a collective than a band. All said, twenty-eight members have cycled through the group—you never quite know who might sit in as a guest on any given night.

Helmed by founding member David Sickmen, the Hackensaw Boys have always had more in common with bands like The Clash, who celebrated the working class roots of their own music, than they did with an overly-polished Nashville mainstream. As evidenced in the Hackensaws’ history, their music fit as easily backing Charlie Louvin as it did in backstage jams on tour with Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips.

With their most recent release, a fresh take on Blaze Foley’s “Oval Room,” these roots music stalwarts speak directly to America’s political unrest. Written and recorded by Foley in the 1980s, the song recalls his list of grievances with the Reagan presidency: “Everywhere he goes, make the people mad / Makes the poor man beg, and the rich man glad.” The band was excited to resurrect this protest gem—which was recorded by their friend Thomas Olivier at Studio Americain in Amsterdam—as the words seem more timely than ever.

XEB (ORIGINAL FORMER MEMBERS OF THIRD EYE BLIND) PERFORMING THE BEST OF 3EB

XEB brings together ex original members of Third Eye Blind. Kevin Cadogan, Tony Fredianelli and Arion Salazar’s contributions span 17 years of the band’s history.

Cadogan, who was a signatory to Third Eye Blind’s Elektra record deal, performed lead guitar and composed the music to 10 of the 14 songs on 3eb’s 1997 Self Titled debut album which sold 6x platinum. Cadogan also composed the music to 6 songs on 3eb’s 2x platinum selling sophomore album ‘Blue’ including the fan favorite “Wounded”.
Cadogan has been hailed as a Master Innovator by Guitar Player Magazine and toured from ’96-’99 performing his co-authored radio hits “How’s It Going To Be”, “Graduate”,
and “Losing A Whole Year”.

In San Francisco 1993/94, they wrote and performed under the name Third Eye Blind until Fredianelli exited the band that same year, but not before contributing musical production elements to songs on the debut such as “Motorcycle Drive By” and the hit “Semi Charmed Life”. Fredianelli later contributed his signature backing vocals and guitar, ushering in a new sound for Third Eye Blind that carried through the fourth
album. Fredianelli composed the music to many songs on the certified gold album ‘Out Of The Vain’. His co-authored radio hits include “Blinded”, “Non-Dairy Creamer” and 2009’s “Bonfire” from the #1 selling album ‘Ursa Major’.

Grammy nominated Bassist and composer Arion Salazar co-wrote many songs (credited and un-credited) throughout the band’s career including the hit “Never Let You Go” along with other fan favorites spanning the bands career. Salazar is credited as a producer on Third Eye Blind’s ‘Blue’ and ‘Out Of The Vein’ albums and is known for his signature use of double/effected bass tracking and vintage keyboards.
